29 June - Nicolas Romero Municipality Day in Mexico
The municipality of Nicolás Romero is one of the 125 municipalities of the State of Mexico and one of the 5 municipalities belonging to the Naucalpan Region. It is located in the north of the State, forming part of the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico; the municipality is a transition zone between the Valley of Mexico and the Sierra de Monte Alto, a spur of the Sierra de Las Cruces. Its municipal seat is Nicolás Romero City, located 58 km from the city of Toluca and 12 km from Mexico City. The municipality is bordered to the north by Villa del Carbon and Tepotzotlan, to the south by Atizapan de Zaragoza and Isidro Fabela, to the east by Cuautitlan Izcalli, to the west by Jiquipilco and Temoaya.
The name Nicolás Romero, as it is known today, was given in honor of the memory of Colonel Nicolás Romero, who participated in the so-called Reform War (from December 17, 1857 to January 1, 1861) on the side of the liberal forces.
In 1820 the present Nicolás Romero was elevated to the category of Municipality with the name of Municipality of San Pedro Atzcapotzaltongo, which occurred during the Spanish era. The first municipal president was the cavalry colonel Don Jesús Gómez de Aguado, who fought in the insurgent army of Miguel Hidalgo. The date of creation of the municipality has been taken as June 29, which coincides with the festivity of the patron saint San Pedro.
