World Architect Day is celebrated on the first Monday of every October, concurrently with the United Nations’ World Habitat Day, was set up by the Union International des Architects (UIA) back in 2005 to “remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat”.
The International Union of Architects (Union internationale des Architectes, or UIA) is an international non-governmental organization that represents over a million architects in 124 countries. The UIA was founded in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1948. The General Secretariat is located in Paris. It is recognized by most United Nations agencies as the only association in its field, including UNESCO, UNCHS, ESOSOC, UNIDO, and the World Health Organization, as well as the WTO.
To mark this occasion, World Architect Day, take a moment to consider the potential of architecture – and, indeed, socially-conscious architects – to transform the lives of human beings across the globe.
It may be easy to forget in the daily grind, but take today to appreciate the great work you do, and the potential it has to better our world. Architects of the world – Happy your Day!
