The October bank holiday was first marked in 1977 after the Irish government determined that the holiday would be welcomed to break up the long stretch of time between Summer and Christmas.
Saint Patrick's Day is probably the best known of the uniquely Irish holidays. It was originally celebrated as the bringing of Christianity to Ireland. It was a religious celebration. However, today it is mostly a secular celebration, associated with heavy drinking and wearing green. Halloween, from the Celtic festival of Samhain originated in County Meath, Ireland over 2,000 years ago.
