28 October - Prefectural Earthquake Disaster Prevention Day
Gifu (岐阜県, Gifu-ken) is a large, landlocked prefecture in the center of Honshu. Takayama, a beautiful town in the mountains, and Shirakawa-go, a collection of small villages even deeper in the mountains, are Gifu's main tourist attractions. The prefectural capital Gifu City is famous for cormorant fishing.
Since 1960, Sept. 1 has been designated as 防災の日 (bōsai no hi, Disaster Prevention Day) to remind the Japanese to be prepared for emergencies. With a 70% possibility of a massive earthquake hitting Tokyo within the next 30 years, many organizations and schools across the country will conduct evacuation drills. Prefectural Earthquake Disaster Prevention Day in Gifu is observed on October 28 to commemorate the 1891 Mino–Owari earthquake.
