4 November - National Tonga Day
Tonga celebrates Tonga National Day every 4 November to commemorate the adoption of its constitution back in 1875, upon approval from King George Tupou I. Tonga is a constitutional monarchy and a member of the British Commonwealth. Its agrarian economy is developing, and its tourist industry, although limited, is growing.
Tonga is an archipelago of 169 islands of which only 36 are inhabited. British explorer James Cook visited Tonga in 1773. Tonga is the home of the humpback whales.
Uniquely, Tonga has also never lost its indigenous governance. After over 1000 years of rule, today's monarchy and its structure still remain the most powerful and influential entity in Tonga.
