5 November - Colón Day in Panama
This holiday (Día de Colón) celebrates the events of 1903, when the citizens of Colon averted a march on Panama City by the Colombian army. On 5 November 1903, the locals in Colons managed to convince the Colombian forces stationed in Colon not to advance on Panama City.
According to national histography, while in Panama City they were celebrating the separation, in Colón there was a small army of approximately 500 Colombian soldiers who made up the Battalion of Shooters commanded by Colonel Eliseo Torres.
They had arrived at the Bay of Colón as a result of a rumor that circulated in Colombia about a supposed Nicaraguan invasion through the Atlantic Coast.
Don Porfirio Meléndez, a Colon merchant at the time, mediated with the Colombian soldiers, telling them that the rumors of a Nicaraguan invasion were false and that Panama City was completely calm, so he urged them to return to Barranquilla.
On November 5, 1903, Juan Antonio Henríquez, a member of the Revolutionary Junta of Colón, sent a telegram to Panama stating the following: “Only now, 7:30 p.m., can it be said that the separation of Panama is assured.”
This crucial fact sealed the historic separatist deed of Panama from Colombia, which was declared on November 3 of that same year.
Today Colón is the capital of the Panamanian province of Colón, located on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The estimated population for 2016 is about 84,229 people in its conurbation, being the third most populous urban concentration in the country after Panama City and San Miguelito.
