11 November - Independence of Cartagena
It is a holiday throughout the nation, and is celebrated especially in Cartagena, capital of the department of Bolívar, where the declaration of autonomy of the city from the Spanish monarchy in 1811 is celebrated. The Independence Day of Cartagena de Indias (Día de la Independencia de Cartagena de Indias) is celebrated every year on November 11 in Colombia.
The current Tourist and Cultural District of Cartagena de Indias was founded on June 1, 1533 by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Heredia. During the 16th century, during the Spanish viceroyalty, the city of Cartagena became one of the most productive commercial ports in America and, in turn, one of the largest cities in the corresponding viceroyalty of New Granada.
For 275 years the town was dominated under the political, economic and social control of the Spanish monarchy.
The city, despite being a great economic center, began to present administrative and social control problems.
