11 November - Women's Day in Belgium
In addition to the Armistice, which celebrates the end of the First World War, November 11 is also Women's Day in Flanders. The choice of this date is directly linked to a certain Simone de Beauvoir.
In 1972, members of the newly formed Comité de Concertation des Femmes went to Paris for a women's day. Impressed by the prevailing atmosphere, they decided to organize such a day in Belgium.
They came into contact with one of the most important feminist theorists: Simone de Beauvoir, author of "The Second Sex" and spouse of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.
The members of the Committee invited her for the first Belgian edition of this day. There was only one free date left in Simone de Beauvoir's agenda: November 11. It was 1972, and the event made history: the first Belgian Women's Day was celebrated in Brussels, at Passage 44. Its success exceeds all expectations, with no less than 12,000 people attending.
The City of Brussels organizes a series of activities to raise public awareness of the role of women in society. From March 6 to 13, 2022, the City of Brussels organizes the Women's Rights Week.
