The holiday considered to be one of the most important events of the Cuban Revolution. It is commemorates the landing of the yacht Granma in 1956.
The landing of a group of Cubans led by Fidel Castro from the yacht Granma is considered to be the day of the beginning of the Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army, from which the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba was its successor. When the revolutionaries overthrew the regime of Fulgencio Batista, the anniversary of Granma's landing was designated as Armed Forces Day to honor the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces.
The first ever military parade in years to be held on the holiday was marked in 2006. In 2016, it was postponed by a month due to the death of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro in November.
