The Noche de los Rábanos or Night of the Radishes is an annual Oaxacan contest held on Christmas Market Day (December 23) in Oaxaca City, Mexico. During this day, people create figures or scenes carved from radishes (Raphanus sativus) which are submitted to compete in various categories.
The event arose during colonial times as a sales method used by farmers to attract buyers, but it was not until 1897 when it was formally declared a contest. Today, the Noche de los Rábanos has a strong popular appeal, bringing together hundreds of contestants and thousands of spectators each year.
