27 December - St. Stephen's Day in Romania
Saint Stephen was the first muctimonious to give his life for the faith. He was also the first of the deacons, elected at the proposal of the Holy Apostles.
On this day, memorial services are held for the souls of those who died in dramatic circumstances, and food parcels are also distributed to young people bearing the name of the Mufti of Stephen. Christians who are facing health problems or have long-standing judgments against proud people are well advised to bring an icon of St Stephen, consecrated on this day, into their home.
In some areas of Muntenia, Stephen's bread is prepared. From a dough similar to that of a cake, greased with honey, they make round loaves. These sweets, reminiscent of the stones that killed St Stephen, are consecrated in church on the feast day and distributed to poor children.
