5 May - Patriots Victory Day or Arbegnoch Qen in Ethiopia
Patriots Victory Day or Arbegnoch Qen is a national holiday in Ethiopia on May 5th. This holiday commemorates the end of the Italian occupation on this day in 1941. This event commemorates the moment when the Italian forces surrender and the Ethiopian emperor takes back the power.
The Arbegnoch (Amharic for "patriots") were Ethiopian resistance fighters in Italian East Africa from 1936 to 1941. The latter referred to them by the derogatory name of shifta.
The Arbegnoch movement was concentrated mainly in the rural regions of Shewa, Gondar and Gojam, and had supporters throughout occupied Ethiopia, including hundreds of Eritreans. They were grouped in small groups operated from Addis Ababa and other cities, known as Wust Arbagna (Knowledgeable Patriots). Groups such as the Black Lions participated in the movement. Between 1937 and 1938, there were an estimated 25,000 active members in Ethiopia. Active fighters were estimated to average 400 to 500 members, depending on the agricultural season.
