10 May - Book Day in Germany
The Day of the (Free) Book is a commemorative day in Germany. It was first held in 1929 and celebrated on May 10, 1947 in Berlin by cultural representatives of all four sectors as a day of remembrance on the occasion of the burning of books in Germany in 1933. In the Soviet sector and later in the GDR, it was continued as "Free Book Day."
In the Federal Republic of Germany, it was reintroduced in 1983 as "Book Day" by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, among others.
Between 1934 and 1942, the event was held by the National Socialists as the Week of the German Book.
