Independence Day is a major occasion in the country. It is celebrated on June 1 every year, although the country actually its independence on 1st January 1962 when the command of New Zealand over Samoa ceased. Independence Day in Samoa is observed throughout the country. A worldwide trend towards decolonisation after the Second World War and increased pressure from the newly formed United Nations led New Zealand to prepare for Samoan independence. Western Samoa achieved independence on 1 January 1962.
The formal celebrations begin with the flag hoisting ceremony. The flag hoisting ceremony is usually held at the Malaeola Hall in Mangere.
Samoa was first discovered by the Dutch voyagers in the 18th century. Subsequently, it was explored by the French and British settlers.
Only 125 kilometers (78 miles) separate Samoa from its nearest neighbor – American Samoa. However, time travel gets a new meaning for locals and the few tourists who make the short hop between the two paradises. Samoa is 24 Hours Ahead of its Closest Neighbor. In fact, both island groups are part of the same family, separated only by historic ties to opposing colonial powers.
