On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was shot and assassinated by Nathuram Godse during his evening prayers at the Birla House. As a result, the country remembers Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary as Martyrs' Day on January 30th.
Every year March 23 is observed as Martyrs' Day when Indians commemorate the sacrifices given by freedom fighters and other people to gain independence from British rule.
