20 May - World Whisky Day
Whisky starts its life as beer. The word whisky means 'water of life'. According to George Bernard Shaw, whisky is liquid sunshine. Grain whisky was first made in 1830, while malt whisky was first created in 1494.
The Irish spell whisky with an ‘e’ (whiskey), whereas the Scots spell it without one. 2018 saw a new record set for the most expensive bottle of whisky. It was a Macallan Valerio Adami 1926, 60-year-old, and was sold for £848,750. From rumoured origins in medieval monasteries to being finely crafted into the nuanced variants we’ve come to love so much today, whisky has earned its well-deserved reputation of being the drink of the sage drinker.
