11 January - Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friends Day
Puddles are formed by rain that falls from the clouds in the sky as droplets of water. When you have lots and lots of water droplets you get a puddle. The water cycle uses the same water over and over again and there is no start or end to the process.
Puddles are home to millions of microscopic invertebrates and small insects. Small mammals and birds will use puddles for drinking and bathing in. Plants and flowers will often grow around established puddles.
Winter in New York City means we get dreaded slush puddles. Kids love playing in puddles & we should be encouraging them!
