Rather than speed or power, curling is a sport that requires great skill and precision above all else. It has been nicknamed as “chess on ice” for the amount of strategy involved in winning a game. This is one of the reasons it is so popular among both players and spectators. It gets its name from the "curl," or spin, a player puts on the stone by twisting it upon its release. Each team has four players: lead, second, third and the team captain, called the skip.
Curling sprouted from Scotland back in the 16th century. The sport started with stones, weighing in at 44-pounds each, that were designed from granite and mined from specific quarries in the Northern UK region. Once they combined the stones with ice, rules and teams, the sport was born.
