It is a holiday dedicated to celebrating techno, a music genre that is growing globally. The date is in honor of the Detroit-techno and electro music genre American musician Juan Atkins, who was born December 9, 1962. He was one of the pioneers of techno music.
While some forms of dance music rely on live instruments (such as disco and early R&B), techno is created using electronic instruments. These include synthesizers like the Roland TB-303 and drum machines like the Roland TR-808.
Although widely associated with Europe, techno music was invented in Detroit and its suburbs in the early 1980s by young African-Americans armed with drum machines, futurist ideals and a predilection for Kraftwerk.
