The word 'balloon' has various origins. 'Ball' or 'large ball' is translated into 'ballon' in French and 'balla' in German. The North Italians called a 'ball shaped bundle' a 'balla', whilst Proto-Indo-European 'bhel' means 'to blow, swell, inflate'.
The very first balloons ever known was made of inflated pig bladders and animal intestines. Professor Michael Faraday was the first one to invent the rubber balloon. Toy balloons appeared for the first time by Thomas Hancock the pioneer rubber manufacturer. The first modern latex balloons were made in 1931 by the Tillotson Rubber Company, which sold them shaped like a cat's head with printed whiskered faces.
The unofficial holiday was created by Jeff Brown in 2000. The holiday encourages people to use balloons and the art of balloon twisting and decorating to bring smiles to the faces of those around them.
