5 February - National Weatherman’s Day in US
John Jeffries, born on 5 February 1745, probably never dreamed that he would be the first American to fly. Jeffries was a thirty-two-year-old Boston physician when the Revolutionary War began in 1775. He was also a Loyalist in a place where loyalty to America’s last king was not only unpopular but also dangerous. Jeffries was a keen meteorologist, one whose interest did not flag with advancing years. He kept detailed records of the weather in Boston from 1774 until March 4, 1776, when they were evidently interrupted by the war, and again from 1790 until 1816.
About 2,000 thunderstorms rain down on Earth every minute. Meteorologists are observers and researchers. They help us prepare for each day's temperatures and let us know to expect rain, snow, or sun.
Meteorologists use a range of satellites, weather balloons, radars, sensors and weather stations to study wind velocity, temperature, humidity and air pressure. Knowing the weather conditions in advance is important to a number of industries including agriculture, shipping, forestry, fishing and transportation.
