The Day of the Open Mosque (Der Tag der offenen Moschee) in Germany has been an annual event since 1997, which takes place on October 3rd, the day of German unity. According to the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, the date was deliberately chosen to clarify the goal of cross-religious understanding. In addition, the Muslims' self-image of being part of the German state that was reunited in 1990 and their solidarity with all non-Muslim residents of Germany should be expressed.
On this day, the mosque communities offer the mostly non-Muslim visitors guided tours of the mosque, panel discussions and book and art exhibitions. Folklore, tea, coffee and pastries are also often part of the supporting programme. Possible reservations and fears are to be dismantled with encounters and discussions.
