9 January - The solemn procession around the Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Manila
The Archdiocese of Manila receives about 12 million pilgrims for the traditional procession of the Black Nazarene.
The celebration begins on January 1 and ends on the 9th with the great procession through the streets of the capital.
According to tradition, the ship caught fire during the voyage, but the image of Christ was miraculously saved from the fire by turning to black. Despite the damage, the people of Manila decided to preserve and honor the image.
Since then, the statue has been called the Black Nazarene and popular belief says that many people have been healed of illnesses by touching the surface.
