Buddhism was first introduced into Bhutan by the Indian Tantric master Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th century. Since that moment Buddhism has taken hold of this tiny country and has shaped its development. Other two founders were Acharya Shanta Rakshita and prevalent King Thisong Deotsen.
Padmasambhava, also called Guru Rimpoche, Tibetan Slob-dpon (“Teacher”), or Padma 'Byung-gnas (“Lotus Born”), legendary Indian Buddhist mystic who introduced Tantric Buddhism to Tibet and who is credited with establishing the first Buddhist monastery there.
