14 December - National Energy Conservation Day in India
Celebrated every year on the 14th of December, the day is a reminder of India's commitment to clean energy and combating climate change. In India, National Energy Conservation Day is observed to raise awareness about the significance of energy and the need of conserving energy by using less energy.
The Energy Conservation Act was implemented by the Energy Efficiency Bureau (BEE) in 2001. BEE is a constitutional body that works under the Government of India and helps in the development of policies and strategies to reduce the use of energy.
BEE recognizes and encourages endeavours of industries in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with National Energy Conservation Awards. BEE also awards prizes to the national winners of the annual National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation.
The scheme has motivated industry and other establishment to adopt energy efficiency measures. The Awards were given away for the first time in December 14 1991, which is celebrated as “National Energy Conservation Day” throughout the country.
