International Day of the Crane is celebrated in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Russia and some other countries. The holiday is an ecological event. It was first initiated in 2002 by a working group on the Eurasian crane together with the Union for the Protection of Birds.
The mating dance of the crane is spectacular. Cranes form lifelong monogamous pair bonds. Cranes are powerful flyers, with some having the ability to fly over the Himalayas. During migration cranes fly with their head and neck straight out and their feet and legs straight behind them. Cranes were so called from the resemblance to the long neck of the bird, cf. Ancient Greek: γερανός, French grue.
