20 September - National Canal Conservation Day in Thailand
Adopted 29 August 1995. In mid-1994, here was a group of Thai environmentalists who drew attention to the way canals all over Bangkok were turning into huge sewers. The Royal Thai Army and educational institutions, all the way down to Bangkok's primary and secondary schools, joined together in the name of an ecological restoration project in this area.
On September 20, 1994, in support of their efforts, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and His Highness traveled by boat from Phan Pha Lilat pier to Tha Khai Gate, Chachengsau Province, a total distance of 72 km, travel time 5-6 hours.
Therefore, September 20 each year is now an important day for Thailand and is celebrated as the National Canal Protection Day.
The conservation project should be arranged activities that campaign about the conservation awareness. Both tourists and business enterprise operators and local people should participate in the activities directly such as pick up trashes in the tourism resources, river and canal conservation project, pick up and siparate garbage and the others. These will encourage the local people and tourists io have more realization, awareness, and senses of belonging and giving the importance to the environment.
