21 November - National Stuffing Day in USA
Stuffing, filling, or dressing is an edible mixture, often composed of herbs and a starch such as bread, used to fill a cavity in the preparation of another food item. There are regional differences with stuffing- in the South cornbread stuffing is popular, and white bread is common is most other parts of the country. Studies show that nearly 50% of the US population stuff their Thanksgiving bird!
Farce is still the word for stuffing in French, and up until "stuffing" replaced it in the 16th century, that was its English name, too. (The word "forcemeat" has the same root.) And the word's resemblance to the genre of comedy is more than just a coincidence. Both words started out as the Latin farcire, which meant (unsurprisingly) "to stuff"--the edible farce was filler for a roast, and the theatrical farce started out as improvisational padding in French religious dramas, when the actors were expected to ham it up for laughs.
In 1972, the Stove Top brand founded the popular boxed stuffing. Around Thanksgiving, they sell nearly 60 million boxed stuffing. National Stuffing Day is a wonderful day and one that celebrates the dish itself.
