Volkswagen (meaning 'People's car' in German) was founded in Berlin as the Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH ('Limited Liability Company for the preparation of the German People's Car', abbreviated to Gezuvor) by the National Socialist Deutsche Arbeitsfront (German Labour Front) and incorporated on 28 May 1937. The original Volkswagen Beetle was one of the best-selling cars for the entire 20th century, selling over 21.5 million vehicles. Shells of the two last Beetles made in Germany are so important to the company that they had them protected in wax.
