Domestic Workers' Day

Domestic work consists of work performed in and for a household, including housework, childcare and other personal care. A generic distinction can be made between paid and unpaid. Household work is the name under which women workers claim their economic, productive activity.

Social movements and organizations of domestic workers consider March 30 as the International Domestic Workers' Day, precisely with the intention of placing their situation of systematic discrimination on the public agenda and calling attention to social indifference. In 1988, in Bogota, Colombia, the first Congress of Domestic Workers was held, where the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Domestic Workers (CONLATRAHO) was formed, and March 30 was established as International Domestic Workers' Day, as a commemorative date to vindicate the rights of this sector, which is made up mostly of indigenous or impoverished women.
