19 April - Feast of the Virgen del Milagro in Alicante, Spain
The Virgen del Milagro Convent in Cocentain (province of Alicante, Spain) occupies part of the Count's Palace, with the convent being the most interesting part from an artistic point of view. The construction began on September 20, 1656, and on January 20, 1670 the Virgin was transferred to its new temple, so we can conclude that the work was completed. The façade is characterized by a complete absence of decoration; a huge semi-circular doorway provides access to the monastery.
Mare de Deu del Miracle (Our Lady or Virgin of the Miracle), the culmination of the feast falls on April 19. This day commemorates the miracle of the picture of Our Lady, which occurred in 1520.
Various religious events are held, at which one can see women dressed in typical Contestant attire. Acts of transmission, supplications, offerings of flowers and processions are particularly noteworthy.
The Holy See has granted Cochentaina the status of Marian Holy Year in 2019.
Researchers observe that the icon of Our Lady shed a total of 27 bloody tears on April 19, 1520, in the chapel of San Antonio del Palau Comtal. There is a notarial record of this event, which is preserved in the municipal archives of Alcoy and will be made available for the exhibition during the anniversary year.
