5 October - World Meningitis Day
Meningitis can cause death in hours; once it strikes, the race to defeat meningitis begins. It is a very serious disease that affects the spinal cord and the membranes of the brain, causing serious injuries, disability and in some cases, even death. The bacteria that causes meningitis can also infect the blood. This disease strikes about 3,000 Americans each year, including 100-125 on college campuses, leading to 5-15 deaths among college students every year.
World Meningitis Day was started in 2009 by a community of people affected by meningitis. World Meningitis Day was celebrated on April 24 every year but in 2022 the date changed to October 5, so that the maximum number of people can be a part of the celebration.
