Pilgrimage Day in Pereña de la Ribera

Hundreds of faithful attend the appointment with the Virgin 'girl' in Pereña de la Ribera.

As since May 14, 1721, dozens of handkerchiefs and chains returned to caress the guardian grille of the white stone, looking for part of that magic that spread throughout the province. From La Sierra to Las Arribes, and even on the other side of the Duero River, the miracles of the white powder given off by that piece of stone were proclaimed in every corner.

According to oral tradition for generations, it was in the early eighth century when the Arab siege ended with what could be the village of Pereña, then located in the Berrocal, a place defended by a castle and whose ruins served to hide the image venerated by its inhabitants in honor of Our Lady of the Angels, a small figure made of stone that would not appear again until the mid-fourteenth century.

It was then when the legend of the apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd indicating where she was buried arose. From that moment the religiosity of this town towards its Virgin was transmitted to all La Ribera, even crossing the Duero and reaching areas of La Sierra after the appearance, on May 14, 1721, inside its base, the Virgin 'girl', a small figure that mimics the first and arose as a result of a series of miraculous events that led to a deep devotion to her image. Since then, the pilgrimage of May 14 has been celebrated with great tradition among its neighbors and inhabitants of the whole region of Vitigudino.
