The National Book Day is commemorated in country every May 26, since 1940. On this date, the anniversary of the National Library of Uruguay, the first public library in the country, founded in 1816, is celebrated.
The National Library of Uruguay is the largest and oldest public library in the country. Its purpose is to preserve and disseminate the national bibliographic and documentary heritage.
