Dravet syndrome is a rare disease of genetic origin, a hard-to-treat epilepsy that begins in the first year of life. It was described in 1978 by the psychiatrist and epileptologist Charlotte Dravet. International Dravet Syndrome Day has been celebrated since 2016 on June 23.
This epilepsy syndrome is mostly refractory to pharmacological treatment and has a prevalence of 7% among epilepsies in children under 3 years of age. It affects boys and girls equally and has a prevalence of one case per 16,000 newborns. Approximately 25% of children with Dravet syndrome have a family history of epilepsy or febrile seizures.
