25 July - Yaque del Norte River Day
Every July 25th is commemorated the day of the Yaque del Norte River, instituted by decree no. 172-95 of July 27, 1995 by the president of that time Joaquín Balaguer, which declared July 25 as "Day of the Yaque del Norte River". This river course is located in the Dominican Republic. It is the longest in the country and the second longest in the whole island, corresponding to the Artibonito River.
It was in the Central Mountain Range where this basin was born, at an altitude of 2,580 meters above sea level in the Loma la Rusilla and drains into the bay of Montecristi, in the Atlantic Ocean, near the city of San Fernando de Montecristi, in the extreme northwest of the country.
The Yaque del Norte river basin is the largest of the Dominican hydrographic basins and the second largest on the island. It has a surface area of some 7,053 square kilometers and its average flow is 80 cubic meters per second, covering a distance of 296 kilometers.
This river bathes a large percentage of the territory of the Western Cibao and Central Cibao, including the cities of Jarabacoa, Santiago de los Caballeros, Mao, among others.
