25 July - Founding Day of Santiago de Guayaquil, Ecuador
On July 25, the Foundation of Santiago de Guayaquil is celebrated, an event that took place in 1535. However, there are versions that assure other previous dates about this important remembrance.
José Antonio Gómez Iturralde in the page efemérides.ec, assures that on "August 15, 1534, Diego de Almagro, before the threat of Pedro de Alvarado, assisted by Sebastián de Benalcázar was forced to found in Liribamba the city of Santiago de Quito. Thirteen days later, on the 28th, for the same reasons and in the same place as Santiago, he founded the town of San Francisco de Quito.
The Royal Decree of May 4, 1534, established that all foundations had to meet the conditions required by the conquest. Otherwise, it recommended its transfer to another place that did meet them. This happened in both cases: San Francisco was moved to the place where it is today within the territory of Quito, on December 6, 1534 and thus kept the toponym.
