28 July - Institutions Day in Cantabria
The Day of the Institutions of Cantabria is a holiday that is celebrated every July 28 in Puente San Miguel (Spain) since its officialization in 1993. It is usually a public holiday throughout the autonomous community.
The celebration commemorates the constitution of the province of Cantabria on July 28, 1778 in the meeting house of Puente San Miguel, a building where the ceremonial acts that correspond to this day take place. The province was in force between 1778 and 1801 and is considered to be the origin of the modern autonomous community of Cantabria, since most of the municipalities that make up the current region were integrated into it, with the exception of the municipalities that made up the former Merindad de Campoo; even so, this was the first time that most of the Cantabrian territory was integrated into the same administrative organization. This fact has its germ in the famous Pleito de los Nueve Valles by which nine valleys of the Asturias de Santillana that achieved their independence from the Dukes of Infantado in the sixteenth century paved the way for the future union of the different Cantabrian territories.
The Day of the Institutions is the closest thing to the official day of the community, although Cantabria has never officially established a day of its autonomous community.
