18 August - Solidarity Day in Chile
Every August 18 is celebrated in Chile, the Day of Solidarity - a special date that seeks to celebrate and awaken in all citizens one of the most important human values that should prevail in Chilean society. Worldwide, the Day of Solidarity is celebrated on August 31 by UN decree.
In 1994, the Chilean Congress decreed August 18 as Solidarity Day in Chile in honor of Father Alberto Hurtado, a figure known for his social justice who died on that day in 1952.
On this day, a Holy Hour is held, where people gather at the tomb of the Blessed to pray in the moments near his death. Afterwards, the Mass of Father Hurtado is celebrated, which invites the entire Chilean community to unite around his message, which is tremendously current with respect to the reality of the country.
At this time, Chileans, through various activities, share with the most disadvantaged. They are invited to think first of others and then of themselves.
