8 September - Extremadura Day
Extremadura Day is celebrated on September 8 and is the official holiday of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura (Spain). For all purposes it is a public holiday throughout Extremadura according to Law 4/1985 of June 3, 1985, of the Coat of Arms, Anthem and Day of Extremadura. Each town council organizes institutional, cultural and sporting events in its municipality to commemorate the regional holiday.
The first Extremadura Day was celebrated in 1985 and the main events took place in the town of Guadalupe, where the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe is located, which is one of the symbols of Extremaduran identity, as it is the sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe, whose canonical coronation as Queen of Hispanity and Patroness of Extremadura, was one of the first manifestations of regionalist exaltation on March 20, 1907 and by the historical and cultural implications that through Guadalupe unite the people of Extremadura with Latin America.
Since 1987 it has been held in the town of Trujillo in Cáceres, where some 100,000 people gather every year to participate in cultural, folkloric, sporting and political events.
