The date was established in 2006 by then President Néstor Kirchner, as a tribute to students who were kidnapped and disappeared in the city of La Plata on September 16, 1976, during the notorious Night of the Pencils.
Today is National Youth Day and a new anniversary of the Night of the Pencils, one of the most aberrant events perpetrated by the last military dictatorship: in 1976, forces of Battalion 601 of the Army Intelligence Service and the Buenos Aires Police kidnapped 10 students from the Normal School No. 3 of La Plata. These young men and women, they believed, were student fighters, ranging in age from 14 to 17.
We call on today's youth to strengthen participatory democracy as the primary engine of initiatives, debate, and public policy implementation to build a more just and egalitarian society, and are convinced that there are no individual solutions when problems are collective.
