29 September - National Corn Day in Mexico
Since 2010, Mexico has celebrated "National Corn Day" every September 29, in recognition of the important role played by this grain in the national economy, food, culture and traditions of Mexicans, as well as the important work of farmers.
Corn is a fundamental crop for the Mexican economy and food. It is also a cultural expression that is present in ancestral traditions and in the founding myths and legends. Likewise, we find that the indigenous peoples, who for centuries have faced multiple adversities to continue protecting and preserving this seed, celebrate the beginning of the corn harvest, because they are the first to vindicate the right of Mexican consumers to continue feeding themselves with native corn varieties, instead of transgenic grains from the United States.
