Since 2011, every October 2, the massacre is commemorated with a national mourning. Today, the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Tlatelolco contains a plaque commemorating the names of 20 of the people killed in 1968.
The Tlatelolco massacre put an end to the student conflict and did not prevent the smooth running of the Olympic Games from October 12 to 27. In December, the National Strike Council was dissolved. However, what happened in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas had important and lasting effects on Mexican society.
The main consequence of the massacre was the formation of a critical attitude of civil society towards the "democratic" powers of government. Although the Díaz Ordaz presidency saw years of economic growth, tension between the ruling party and various social sectors increased.
Some groups became radicalized, for example in the public universities, and this led in some cases to the formation of new guerrilla organizations, which acted during the period of armed conflict and political repression commonly known in Mexico as the "Dirty War".
