The study of lung function is one of the basic elements in the diagnostic evaluation of patients with suspected respiratory diseases, as well as their follow-up. October 14th is celebrated as "World Spirometry Day", an event promoted worldwide by the European Respiratory Society (ERS). The aim of this date is to publicize the study and thus raise awareness of the importance of lung diseases and the preventive measures to be taken into account.
Spirometry is the most important respiratory function test and is the initial test in the assessment of respiratory function. It measures the air that a person is able to move as a function of time. It provides information on lung capacity and how fast we are able to move it. Healthy lungs should have a capacity adjusted to their age, size and gender and be able to mobilize air very quickly (more than 70% of the capacity should be mobilized in the first second).
It is an easy, reproducible, noninvasive and inexpensive test. It has spread outside the pulmonary function laboratories of Pneumology Services and is now also present in health centers.
