21 October - National Poet's Day in the Dominican Republic
This date is commemorated in honor of the birth of the most important Dominican poetess: Salomé Ureña de Henríquez, a central figure of Dominican poetry in the 19th century.
Poetry is a literary genre in which the aesthetic qualities of language, rather than its content, are used. It is one of the oldest artistic manifestations.
The term poem was formerly understood as any literary composition, since the word comes from the Greek verb poiesis, which means creation with the word. The poem is thus any reading or work written with artistic intent.
Poetry can be used to describe many things. It can make sense or not, it can rhyme or not, or it can be serious or funny.
Salomé Ureña de Henríquez (1850-1897) was a Dominican poet and educator and was one of the central figures of 19th century lyric poetry. She was also an innovative figure in the education of women in the Dominican Republic.
She was born in Santo Domingo on October 21, 1850. She received her first educational lessons from her father who taught her the classic works of Spanish and French writers.
