Hogmanay is what we Scots call New Year's Eve, December 31, the big night marking the arrival of the new year. Its origins can be traced back to the winter solstice celebration among the Vikings with wild feasts in late December.
Interestingly, the Scottish New Year's Eve is celebrated even more than Christmas, which, after the Protestant Reformation, was not celebrated for centuries, and was not a public holiday until 1958.
Hogmanay, on the other hand, is enjoyed with two public holidays, January 1 and 2.
