Hamburger Dom

The Hamburger Dom is a large fair that takes place on the Heiligengeistfeld in the center of Hamburg, Germany. With three fairs (Winterdom - Dom-Markt, early November to early December; Frühlingsdom - Spring Festival, mid-March to mid-April; Sommerdom - Hummelfest, late July to late August) each year, it is the largest and longest fair in the whole of Germany and attracts around ten million visitors annually, it is also known as a folk festival (beer festival and traveling fair). Hamburger Dom is also one of the most famous festivals in the Hamburg metropolitan region.

Every Friday at 10:30 pm, Hamburger Dom stages an impressive fireworks display on the Heiligengeistfeld, which can be seen over large parts of the city. A laser show was set up for the first time at Winterdom 2021.

Hamburger Dom has its origins in the 11th century: Traders and craftsmen, as well as jugglers and quacks, sought shelter from the wind and weather in what was then Hamburg's St. Mary's Cathedral on Speersort. Burchard Grelle, as Archbishop of the Archbishopric of Bremen and canon of Hamburg, was annoyed by this and banned the showmen from the building in 1334. However, even the churchgoers resented this. As a result, Archbishop Burchard expressly allowed the traders to be present in the cathedral in 1337, but only in "Hamburg bad weather". And so the market remained in the cathedral until the building was demolished in 1804. After the cathedral was demolished (1804-1807), the market was moved to the Gänsemarkt in 1804, but kept the name "Dom". From 1892, the market was held on Heiligengeistfeld, and the name was used for all markets at this location.
