National Mario Day, meant to celebrate and honor the Mario character owned by Nintendo, is celebrated on March 10th. The date was chosen because it looks like Mario's name - MAR 10. Mario is the character in the best-selling video game franchise in history - Mario, created by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario character was initially released by Nintendo in 1985 — doesn't that make you feel old?
A legendary Nintendo video game character, Mario was born in 1981. Initially, he was named Jumpman, and was a carpenter, in the arcade game Donkey Kong. The same year, Nintendo of America renamed him Mario.
Pauline was known as Lady, and the game introduced her as Mario's girlfriend. The name Pauline was given after the then-girlfriend of Nintendo of America's warehouse manager, Don James.
