15 March - National Day in Hungary
In 1848, Hungary did not have its own government or ministries, but operated instead through a governing body subordinate to the direct authority of the Habsburgs. The parliament met rather irregularly at that time and it could only be convened by the ruler, but nothing regulated its frequency or length.
March 15 is one of the three greatest Hungarian national days. March 15 also marks a successful revolution, but in the Springtime of the Peoples in 1848.
The Hungarian units were repulsed at Schwechat near Vienna by Jelačić's troops, who had advanced into Austria. Whereas the revolution in Vienna was defeated with the capture of the city by the imperial army on 31 October 1848, the war of independence continued in Hungary.
