23 March - Day of Hungarian-Polish Friendship
The declaration establishing March 23 as Friendship Day of the two nations was adopted on March 12, 2007 by unanimous decision of all members of the Hungarian Parliament. Four days later, on March 16, 2007, such a resolution was adopted by acclamation by the Polish Parliament.
Since then, every year the cities of Poland and Hungary have alternately hosted a festival of friendship between our countries and peoples with the participation of the presidents of both countries.
Since the mid-19th century, cultural artists and researchers of history on both sides of the Carpathian Mountains have been reflecting on the extraordinary phenomenon of the centuries-old friendship between Poles and Hungarians. The most moving testimonies of this special spiritual bond come from more recent times. Above all, it was expressed in acts of collective empathy and far-reaching, one might say self-sacrificing, solidarity. The prevalence of Polonophile attitudes in Hungary in the 19th century, which was also reflected in Hungarian poetry of the time, the mass participation of Poles in the Hungarian freedom fights of 1848/49, the Hungarian acceptance of one hundred and several thousand Polish refugees during World War II, the comprehensive support of Poles for Hungarian October 1956 are other stations on the long trail of friendship between the two nations.
